Clair Dean Mattas, 74, died April 30, 2014 at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born April 23, 1940 in Ellsworth, the son of Milton and Marie Jirik Sommers. He was a graduate of Hutchinson High School and had attended Hutchinson Community College. He had owned and operated Sommers Plumbing, Heating, and Air Conditioning and later worked as an inspector for the city of Hutchinson. He was a member of the Moose Lodge and American Legion. He had served in the United States Army. He enjoyed restoring his 1958 Chevy Impala and 1955 Chevy Bel Aire Convertable. Clair loved his family and his cat Groucho. On December 23, 1984 he married Sharon Cheeves in Hutchinson. She survives.
Other survivors include 2 daughters, Mischia Wright and husband Denny, Lawrence and Torie Boucos and husband Vic, Hutchinson, a son, Ray Mattas and wife Becky, Emporia, a step-daughter, Deidree Cheeves, Kansas City, MO, 8 grandchildren, and 1 great grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM Monday at Fairlawn Burial Park, Hutchinson. Family requests causal attire to be worn. Military honors will be provided by Fort Riley Honor Guard. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice House or the Wounded Warriors, both in care of Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home and Crematory, Hutchinson.
