Robert "Bob" Edward Powell, 92, passed away November 21, 2013 at Hospice House, Hutchinson. He was born October 27, 1921, the son of Robert E. Lee and Anna Huff Powell in Codell, KS.
He was a World War II Hero, serving aboard the U.S.S. Middleton, landing Marines onto beaches in three separate conflicts in the South Pacific, the deadliest being Tarawa. For his bravery and service he was awarded 3 bronze stars and other medals.
He is survived by 2 daughters, Marti Robbins, Coffeyville, KS and Mari Chew Reynolds, Atlanta, GA, 4 granddaughters, Shannon Corbin, Lyons, Elise Chew, Atlanta, GA, Kelli Altvater, and McKenzie Reynolds, both of Hutchinson, 3 great granddaughters, Kati Vogts, Allison Caveness, and Makena Caveness, and 3 great great grandsons, Kolton Altvater, Trey Corbin, and Chance Caveness.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, 2 sisters, a son, and a grandson.
Cremation is planned. Memorial services will be held 2:00 PM Monday, November 25, 2013 at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home and Crematory Chapel,Hutchinson, with Father Nicholas Voelker presiding. Military Honors will be provided by the Kansas National Guard Military Funeral Honors Team. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice House or the Pleasant View Home of Inman, both in care of Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home and Crematory, Hutchinson.
