Gladys Nadine Cokeley Avery, 78, passed away April 18, 2013, at her home north of Hutchinson, Kansas. Gladys was born March 3, 1935, in Gridley, Kansas, the 8th of 11 children born to Alva and Bertha (Long) Cokeley.
Mrs. Avery raised four children before becoming a working woman, spending 14 years at Namee Wholesale, retiring as a General Manager and then five years in the kitchen of Liberty Elementary School as a baker. After retiring, Mr. and Mrs. Avery spent many enjoyable years traveling the United States in their RV.
Gladys married Kermit (Jake) Avery on December 23, 1953, in Hutchinson. Survivors include her husband, Jake Avery, of the home; her son, Clayton Joe Avery and his wife, Melissa Ann; three daughters, Bertha Mae Hood and her husband, Floyd Larry Lee; Rose Marie Avery; and Jean Ann Feaster, and her husband Gerald Brett. Also surviving are 12 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, two sisters Elsie Law and Ramona Yorgensen; and two brothers, Major and John Cokeley. She was preceded in death by two brothers and four sisters.
Visitation and remembrances with the family will be on April 22, from 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM, with Bill Bower, sharing comforting words at 3:00 PM, in the Community Room of Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Hutchinson, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Hospice & HomeCare of Reno County, in care of Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home and Crematory.
