Galen L Howard, 75, passed March 6, 2013 at Hutchinson Regional Medical Center. He was born November 18, 1937, in Kinsley, KS, the son of Gordon and Helen Krupp Howard.
A graduate of Kinsley High School, he was a United States Navy veteran serving in Hawaii and San Diego on the USS Hassayampa from August 1956 thru 1960. He worked at Southwestern Bell, and Nuway Drugs, before owning and operating Howards IGA in Arlington, KS. He later retired from Betts Bakery/Rainbo Bread after 20 years as a transport driver and a member of the Teamsters Union, Local #795.
A member of Eastwood Church of Christ, Hutchinson, KS, he was a volunteer fireman and later fire chief in Arlington, KS.
On April 4, 1959 he married Lena “Lorene” Larsen in Hoisington, KS, she passed December 17, 1987. Later he married Ruth Leiker in Las Vegas, Nevada on July 31, 1989, she survives of the home.
Other survivors include; children, Teresa Williams and husband Chuck of Lenexa KS, David Howard and wife Toni of Basehor, KS, Michael Howard and wife Melissa of Eudora, KS, Suzanne Shackelford and husband Pete, of Hutchinson, KS, Michael Dinges and wife Tana of Victoria, KS, and Deborah Jones and husband Keith of Culver City, CA; grandchildren, Scott, Maresa and Kendra Hornbaker, Virginia Perry, Danielle and Aaron Williams, Madison and Zach Howard, Lauren and Emily Howard, Celeste Wray, Rawley Dinges, Austin and Kenny Jones; a sister Judy Langlois, Spearville, KS and many nieces and nephews.
Galen was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers Frank and Dennis Howard.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday March 9, 2013, at Penwell-Gabel Funeral Home, Hutchinson with Jimmie Wray Meade and Richard Foster presiding. Family will greet guests from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM prior to the services. Burial will follow in Eastside Cemetery.
